Resumen:
Leprosy is a chronic, granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae,
which affects the skin and the peripheral nervous system. It develops slowly, and most
individuals respond to this infection according to their immune system against the bacillus .
Objectives: To identify by means of literary findings means that favor the early detection of
leprosy as a determinant factor in the control of the disease. Methodology: This is an
integrative review. The search occurred during the months of June to August of 2016, in the
databases LILACS, electronic page of the Virtual Health Library (BIREME) and SciELO.
There were also findings from books. Results: Among the 17 publications found, and some
book chapters, 9 articles were selected for discussion. It is notorious in the results of this
research that the main focus to control leprosy is the timely detection of new cases as early as
possible. This measure is mainly aimed at preventing disability and physical and neurological
sequelae. Conclusion: Diagnostic and treatment activities are essential in the control of
leprosy, with health professionals being part of this responsibility, and they must have
adequate technical preparation to attend the individuals who present the symptoms of the
disease, being able to identify them and initiate a treatment according to their classification.
