Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease of multiple etiology, characterized by hyperglycemia, by increasing in the secretion in insulin action or both. The DM2 is an important public health problem globally. Upon this problem, there is a greater need to find in the foods that have functional properties, a way of prevention or even an aid in the treatment of such as diseases, including diabetes. Functional food is defined as those foods, which has specific effect on the health due their chemical constitution, and should not expose those who consume them, to hygienic risk or health. Based in this, this work is a literature review with goal of to know the functional properties of food, like chia, quinoa, oats, and eggplant demonstrate the importance of functional foods for prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 diabetes and correlate the chemical properties of functional foods with a reduction of the blood glucose levels. Researches had conducted in the data basis in Medline, Pubmed, Lilacs, Scielo, Google Scholar and National and International Health Committees of articles published between 2004 and 2016. For this literature, review were used 85 articles. The follow search terms (keywords and delimiters) were used in several combinations: 1) Foods, 2) Functional, 3) Treatment, 4) Prevention, 5) Chia, 6) Quinoa, 7) Eggplant, 8) Dietary Fibre, 9) Flaxseed, 10) Passion Fruit and 11) Jabuticaba 12) Oatmeal. Through research, it was possible to observe that some aforementioned foods have an effect, as well as act in preventing of heart diseases, hypertension and cancer among other diseases. In front of this, it is conclude that the regular consumption of foods with functional properties helps in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, as also other chronic diseases no-transmitted, which comes to be very important for the diabetics because the disease, for itself is the gateway to these other chronic diseases, like as hypertension arterial and heart disease.
