to the first, causing a pharmacological or clinical response. Combinations of drugs to treat
chronic diseases are very common, especially in intensive care unit patients (ICU), however,
can cause drug interactions, which are responsible for treatment failure, endangering the lives
of patients and generating high costs for the hospital. This study aims to analyze the
occurrence and the profile of potential drug interactions in the University Hospital Alcides
Carneiro ICU patients. A descriptive research with quantitative and qualitative approach was
carried out. Data collection was done between January to June 2015, from prescriptions ICU.
Data were collected through a specific form for this purpose. For the identification of
potential interactions utilized the Drug-Reax Software System Micromedex® Health Series.
Among the 109 prescriptions evaluated, 76 (69.72%) had some interaction, totaling 244
potential interactions. The profile of most interactions found was: pharmacodynamic
mechanism of action, greater degree of severity, reasonable documentation and onset of
action not specified. There was an average of 6.91 medications per prescription. All patients
who received 10 or more drugs had some interaction. The polypharmacy can be considered a
risk factor for the occurrence of interactions. The results show that the emergence of
interactions in the ICU has a high prevalence. The use of associations that can cause drug
interactions is justified by their risk / benefit, which should be evaluated by the pharmacist
and the healthcare team. To reduce the appearance of possible interactions is essential to
monitor the prescriptions and it is necessary that health professionals have knowledge about
the mechanisms of action of potential interactions so that there is continuous monitoring and
observance of patients, thereby improving the clinical management and avoiding
complications that may occur.
