Résumé:
The problem involving gender violence causes losses into the victim’s lives as a whole, and
violence isn’t just about physical aggressions. The victims need a treatment that is suitable,
qualified, unabridged and mindful to its subjectivity. Considering that the problem is complex
and the need to provide greater visibility to this issue, this work is guided by the question:
What are the main challenges faced by nurses caring for women in situations of violence? The
intention to investigate and to understand the challenges faced by health professionals at the
time of attendance for women in situations of violence requires a qualitative study. This
research is exploratory, because it aims to elaborate questions in order to establish greater
intimacy with the field of study, which involves the challenges lived by the health
professionals when caring for female victims of violence. The investigative process occurred
through half-structured interviews conducted by the researcher, and were interviewed eleven
nurses who are currently working at the urban area of Cajazeiras - Paraíba. The analysis of the
collected data was made based on the theory of Thematic Content Analysis, which is an
interpretive analysis’s method of data collected in interviews. The collected data show that the
professionals face several difficulties. They permeate from the feelings that affect them, such
as insecurity, anger, anxiety, grief, etc; unto legal barriers and the victims anguish, which
hinder or delay the complaint. The fear is a feeling that is a common sense among the victims
and the professionals, and it is caused by the unpreparedness’ professionals, lack of effective
protective measures, stigmas imposed to the situations of violence and the non-compliance
fully of Maria da Penha Law. The fears felt by them contribute to the invisibility of the
violence cases against women. Even facing difficulties, it can be seen that the nurses are
moved by the patients’ pains and would like to see them free from oppressive situations. The
technical qualification and psychological support to professionals; with the improvement of
the Health and Protection Network appears to be measures that will reduce the deficit in the
care, resulting in the decrease of women in situation of violence.
