Resumen:
This study aimed to assess the water situation of the rural population of the
municipality of Pombal - PB, using the water poverty index, in order to contribute to
the development of strategies and activities aimed at water resources management
and the decision making. Were employed indicators available of national and
international literature, related to the Capacity (C), Resources (R), Use(U), Access
(A) and Environment (E). The information was obtained through interviews of
representative portion of the population of the study area. The results showed that
85.7% of the rural communities had a regular WPI, while only two communities
presented performed well in relation to Poverty Index water. If ratified the importance
of using water social technologies to mitigate the water scarcity in the surveyed
communities, however, it was found that it is critical expand the programs carried out
so that a greater number of people in rural communities have access and water
security, providing appropriate conditions for their stay in the country and a better
quality of life. It was concluded that the WPI is an important tool that can be used to
assist public authorities in preparing projects and strategies to mitigate problems
related to the issue of water scarcity in rural communities
