Resumen:
Anxiety and depression bring great losses to the biopsychosocial health of health
professionals and, therefore, changes in mental health can effectively contribute to the
occurrence of absenteeism, which is the sum of a certain employee' absence periods in
organization. Considering this, the present research aimed to investigate the presence of
anxiety and depression and its relation with absenteeism among the health professionals who
work at the Hospital Universitário Júlio Maria Bandeira de Mello. This is a cross-sectional,
exploratory study of a descriptive nature with a quantitative, whose population was
constituted by 87 health workers, active in the University Hospital. The research was carried
out in September and October of this year. The institution counted on the total of 124 health
professionals. The participants in the study were the health professionals active in the
University Hospital who voluntarily accepted to participate in the research. This study did not
include those professionals who, although they met the inclusion criteria, were absent from
the service for licenses, certificates, vacations and / or others. Searching for the
characterization of the subjects of the research, a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied
with personal and professional questions. Aiming to investigate the presence of anxiety and
depression, two validated questionnaires were used - Beck anxiety and depression inventory.
The present study is linked to the project entitled "The Relations between Health and Work in
a University Hospital" and began after the approval by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP)
of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Cajazeiras campus, under the process number
2,706,976 and CAAE: 89699018.0.0000.5575. The results indicated that the profile of HUJB
professionals included mostly 30 to 34 year old female, without children, white, married,
living with the family, with leisure activities, however without the habit of practicing physical
activities, technicians or bachelors in Nursing, with 4 to 6 months of professional performance
in the University Hospital. The class that most stated using psychotropic drugs was that of
nursing professionals. In addition, about 10% of the participants in this study presented at
least some degree of symptoms of depression and anxiety, what demonstrates the need to
know, identify and intervene in the psychic illness of health workers, in order to try to avoid
absenteeism, and offer better quality health care in the high Paraiba interior. Regarding the
occurrence of absenteeism, the predominant reason for absence at work was the performance
of surgeries. Finally, it was found that professionals with a history of psychotropic use had
higher indexes anxiety and depression. It is also worth noting that workers who have not
heard of absenteeism also have higher depression means. These results point to the relevance
of investigating this issue, in order to contribute to improve the quality of life of these
professionals at work.
