Among the major products produced by the red ceramic industry, for the
construction, there are the ceramic tiles, which are components used for
roofing, with varied configurations and specifications. Firms in this sector, there
is an evaluation of the characteristics of the clays used by them, and most have
no knowledge about the properties of the masses used in the manufacturing
process. The raw materials (clay and accessories) that make up the masses
have the chemical, mineralogical and texture, which will influence the
processing and final properties of the tiles. In this study were characterized five
types of clay provided by a red ceramic industry of the State of Paraiba, aiming
to make ceramic bodies that meet appropriate specifications for the
manufacture of tiles with technological properties desired. The clays have
characterized typical characteristics of raw materials for brick clay. As for
texture, clay and only two had values close to the masses indicated by the
Winkler diagram for the production of tiles. The clay selected and chosen one of
the formulations, which showed lower plasticity, elected the most suitable for
the manufacture of ceramic tiles, with technological properties that met the
minimum requirements recommended by the Institute for Technological
Research - IPT.
