Resumen:
Introduction: Hansen’s disease is a infectious disease, caused by Micobacterium Leprae
which one presents Brazil as second country with worldwide prevalence of the disease.
Researches analyze the importance of Hansen’s disease epidemiological characteristics in
comprehension of factors which contributes to maintenance of epidemic and establishment of
new strategies in disease control. Objective: To describe clinical and epidemiological
characteristics of Hansen’s disease notified in the town of Cajazeiras (PB) during January
2002 to January 2012. Method and Material: Descriptive Observational Epidemiological
study, with quantitative approach. The population/sample was made of all the forms of
Hansen’s disease case notifications available in Sistema de Informação de Agravos de
Notificação (SINAN) during January 2002 to January 2012, adding 759 cases up. Datas were
collected in January and February 2014 via pre-prepared form consisted of present variables
in Hansen’s disease notification/investigation form and typed in Excel for Windows
spreadsheet, 2010 version, checked, corrected and imported to Statistical Package for the
Social Sciences (Program SPSS), 20.0 version, for statistical analysis. The research was
approved by Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa (CEP) from Hospital Universitário Alcides
Carneiro (HUAC) of Universidade Federal de Campina Grande – UFCG. (CAAE
09432013.7.0000.5182). Results: During 2002 and 2012, 759 cases of Hansen’s disease were
registered, 50,5 % of them in 20 to 34 year-old females with low education, there were
registers of 54 cases (7,2%) of minors under 15 years old. The clinical form was the
indeterminate (30,6%), paucibacillary operational classification (57,7%), admission by new
case with (93,4%), new case detection by referral (57,3%) without record of Hansen’s disease
reactions (32,7%), disability 0 (zero), presenting discharge as cured (91,4%). Final
Considerations: the epidemiological profile development to identify and comprehend factors
that facilitate the epidemic permanence, as well as implementing measures which aim the
disease control. The town of Cajazeiras - PB presents high content of Hansen’s disease
notification, it can be noticed that the relevant forms are not being filled out adequately.
