Résumé:
Introduction: Chronic renal failure when not properly treated tends to progress to the terminal
phase; when the regenerative capacity of the renal parenchyma is abolished, renal replacement
therapy becomes essential for the maintenance of the patient's life. Dialysis represents a
technique that aims to partially replace this renal function, and hemodialysis is the most used
modality of therapy. Objective: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile of
patients undergoing hemodialysis. Method: This is a cross-sectional, observational and
descriptive study, with a documental and field-based, quantitative approach, performed at the
Hemodialysis Center of the Jaguaribe Valley, in Russas - Ceará. The data analyzed in this study
were collected between August and September 2015 and correspond to the secondary analysis
of the information collected and evaluated for the research: "Vascular accesses: Clinical-
epidemiological profile of patients in the Hemodialysis service in the interior of Ceará - Brazil".
The results were analyzed according to absolute and percentage indices, using the help of tables
produced in the Microsoft® EXCEL® program to present the results. Results: Of the 110
patients evaluated, 78.18% had ages between 19 and 64 years; 63.30% of this total is
characterized as male individuals. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus have been shown to be
the most common underlying diseases. It was observed a predominance in treatment time of
less than one year, represented by 29.09% of the sample; 85.45% reported double-lumen
catheter as the first vascular access and 79.09% had arteriovenous fistula. Conclusion: The
sociodemographic and clinical profile of the patients submitted to hemodialysis at the Jaguaribe
Valley Hemodialysis Center were similar to those presented in national studies. Where a large
number of patients are observed, they begin treatment with catheters, showing percentages
higher than recommended.
