Vitamin D is a molecule universally present in living beings and, although called
vitamin is actually a steroid hormone. It can be synthesized in the skin from exposure
to sunlight or from dietary sources as well as supplements. Recent evidence
correlate insu fi aware vitamin D levels with an increased risk of developing other
non-bone pathologies such as: cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, cancer,
diabetes, multiple sclerosis, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, infectious disease. This
work seeks to describe on the comparison between the absorption of vitamin D by
the body through exposure to sunlight compared to supplementation by
multivitamins. A literature review was conducted in Medline, Pubmed, Lilacs, Scielo
and national and international health committees of the articles published in the last
10 years, covering about vitamin D. The following search terms (keywords and
delimiters) were used in various combinations: 1) Vitamin D; 2) multivitamins; 3)
Solar Orientation; 4) prevention and treatment. They found 116 articles, and these
were used 76 articles and two doctoral theses. It was concluded that insufficient
levels of vitamin D are associated with low frequency of exposure to the sun, and
quantities ingested in the diet and the benefits achieved with supplementation are
lost after stopping its use regular exposure to the sun is the main way of getting
vitamin D in comparison to other forms.
