Sweetening food additives are extremely sweet flavor used in beverages and processed foods with the aim to replace totally or partially the sugar. They are classified into: nutritive sweeteners are fructose, sorbitol, mannitol, isomalt, maltitol, lactitol and xylitol, and not as nutritious: Assecumafe-K, aspartame, cyclamate, saccharin, sucralose, stevioside and Neohesperidine. In patients with diabetes sweeteners play an important factor in your eating plan, providing the sweet taste that was previously acquired with sucrose, helping in better glycemic control. This study aimed to present an overview about the importance of the use of sweeteners in diabetes. This is a retrospective study of literature in databases Lilacs, Medline, Pubmed, Scielo and national and international health committees of articles published in the last 14 years, covering about sweeteners. They were used in various combinations descriptors: Sweeteners; Diabetes; meal plan - in view of the observed aspects of a study was conducted in the abstracts and selected works were analyzed and categorized discussed. The subject of this work is the ultilização sweeteners from society, concluding that the sweetener is an effective alternative for the control of blood glucose and may be included in the nutritional therapy of diabetes, contributing to an improvement in the quality of life of these people.
