Abstract:
The increase in the elderly population has brought several improvements in the quality
of life for this age group, among them the extension of sexual activity, offering the possibility
of increased sexual frequency and a better performance during the act. With the growth of
sexually active elderly arise due to the consequences no association of prevention methods,
subject to the possible involvement of STIs, among them HIV/AIDS, the elderly. This study
aims to analyze the understanding of older people about the preventive measures for
HIV/AIDS and the reasons / vulnerability of the characteristics of this age group. It is a
descriptive exploratory research with qualitative approach, being held with the group of
elderly participants of the Pastoral of the Elderly, developed in the parish of St. John Bosco in
the city of Cajazeiras - PB. The results presented showed that a good portion of respondents
has a good level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, but some still have myths related to how to
get the virus and still have seniors who even heard of and have access to media that convey of
the virus and the disease can not assimilate information. The survey found older people as
sexually active and the realization of unprotected sexual intercourse, as well as multiple
partners, making this vulnerable age group to HIV/AIDS as much as the others.
