Among the different specializations of current wireless networks, Wireless Mesh Networks
are characterized by the decentralization of the communication process, where access
points are not available. Moreover, properties such as self-organization, self-discovery, selfhealing
and self-configuration allow the deployment of network topologies in a simplified
and agile way. However, the development of new solutions to provide Quality of Service
is a challenging task due to characteristics of the wireless channel. Problems such as high
interference in the transmission channel, low availability of bandwidth, high variation in
the network conditions make its development much more complex than solutions for wired
networks.
One of the major restrictions of currently available solutions in the literature lies in
the fact that mesh networks rely on traditional protocols. Such protocols do not take
into account, during the routing process, the broadcast transmission nature of wireless
networks. In this work, we propose a routing protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks with
QoS support, named Multi-User Diversity Protocol with Quality of Service – MuDP-QOS.
The MuDP-QoS uses two approaches for transmission based on the multi-user diversity
concept (opportunistic routing and network coding) in a hybrid manner. Also, in order
to perform the resource reservation, we use an adaptive QoS approach which allows the
application defining a range for QoS parameters. Based on this, it is possible to perform
an optmization in the resource reservation process according to the network restrictions.
