Resumen:
Brazil's prison population increased significantly compared to the 1990's, reaching a historical record of 726,712 inmates in 2016. Especially in Paraíba, the increase was 1,897 in the period from 2009 to 2014, however, the numbers of homicides also increased, obtaining a percentage variation of about 23% in the same period. At this juncture, the objective of the study was to diagnose the prison system in Brazil and Paraíba and analyze the level of relationship/correlationship between total prisons (independent variable) and homicides (dependent variable) - deaths from aggression - perpetrated in Paraíba between the period from 2009 to 2014. For this purpose, data in time series with data crossing was used in this study. The method used in this study was Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. This coefficient measures the level of correlation between two variables, varying between +1 and - 1. The result showed a low statistical correlation between the variables prisons and homicides, with a positive sign in the correlation of 2.231, indicating for a low relationship, where more prisons result in more homicides. That is, that the "prisons" policy is not being successful with respect to the reduction of homicides in the state.MELO
