Resumen:
Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a neoplasm which is associated with human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8). Such pathology was described in 1972 by the Hungarian dermatologist Moritz Kaposi until then known as Classic Kaposi’s Sarcoma. Then, three other clinical forms were described, including KS endemic, iatrogenic and epidemic, the latter being discussed in this study. KS epidemic is an opportunistic neoplasm which depends on the previous infection of HHV-8 or KSHV to develop, as it is also known. From this the present study aimed to carry out a literature review of the most relevant aspects of the SK as etiology, pathogenesis, histology and treatment. The study was done through national and international literature survey, with a descriptive and retrospective study from the onset of the disease until the present years to integrate research and discoveries made in the historical evolution of this neoplasia. This study can be observed that this disease has gained importance from the HIV epidemic. It can be identified through literature that the etiology of this disease is the human herpes virus type 8 and not as believed to HIV. It is a disease that occurs more in men and among the treatments, which had more efficacy was highly active antiretroviral therapy inhibiting the weakening of the immune system of the patient.
