Studies on the perception of trash aimed to investigate the relationship between society and its environment in order to understand factors, mechanisms and processes that lead people to have opinions and attitudes about the changes in this environment. The correct disposal of waste becomes increasingly important because if done incorrectly it may harm the environment and the general population. In urban area of Cuité, Paraíba (PB), garbage collection takes place twice a week. Nevertheless, residents are dumping in inappropriate places. This study analyzes the perception of São José Neighborhood residents, Cuité (PB), about what they think and how they handle their waste. The exploratory research with elements of a case study used as data collection instruments systematic observation, informal conversations and structured interviews. A microarea of the neighborhood was chosen for the interviews. Were heard 18 residents. Data analysis was carried out through a qualitative approach, identification and appreciation of discourses. We noticed that São José Neighborhood residents have certain knowledge about the importance of good management of solid waste, but not always do it. The study points out the importance of environmental education that respects the residents and consider their needs.
