Cannabis sativa L. (Cannabaceae): a morphological and medicinal approach. Since the first fruits of mankind Cannabis sativa L. has been used for medicinal purposes for the purpose of treating the most varied diseases. This review aims to disseminate the scientific knowledge about its morphological and taxonomic classification, together with the medicinal use of this ancient plant. Modern medicine still does not fully understand the therapeutic potential of C. sativa, however, there are significant advances in the area that allow its safer use, with records of efficiency in pathologies such as glaucoma, epileptic seizures and relief of cancer and AIDS symptoms. Thus, prospecting, identification, handling and advancement of the use of its chemical components in therapeutics are promising, although for reasons of public policy, it is still inaccessible or limited to several countries.
