Abstract:
The recent population growth is the result of a significant improvement in the rate of
life expectancy, and this improvement was only possible due to heavy industrial and
technological development in recent decades. The results of this intense production chain are the
solid waste and their negatives effects in the ecosystem. This research aimed to understand the
main problems related to the management of solid waste in Aurora-CE. The methodology is an
adaptation of the system indicator Pressure-State-Impact-Response (PSIR) developed by the
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP), It is applied by means of questionnaires to social actors and
consultation of public agencies. There were used 29 (twenty nine) indicators, 23 were evaluated
as UNFAVOURABLE, for occurrence of animals at the dump unit, presence of people working
near the disposal unit, waste production rate above from the level recommended by the
Brazilian Institute of Public Administration (BIPA). Regarding the indicators evaluated as
FAVOURABLE, it can be cited the inclusion of popular participation in the garbage
management throught projects that culminate in effective action. The evaluation of qualitative
and quantitative nature of the environment reflects a concern with known situations and others
not unedited yet on actual conditions of management municipal of solid waste (MSW) as well
as indicating measures, that can solve the correct management of SW to short, medium and
long-term in the city of Aurora - CE.
