Abstract:
This monograph is the result of the study on the cotton-growing community of Triunfo
(PB), as well as a set of personal experiences developed around this culture. I
analyzed the establishment, rise and decline of cotton cultivation in this space in a
specific time cut, the decade of 1980, with a special focus on the phenomenon of
infestation of crops by the cotton boll weevil. For the production of this work I used the
oral sources, interviewing farmers and traders who were directly involved with the
cultivation and trade of cotton in Triunfo. The transcribed data were submitted to the
analysis of content serving as the basis for the production of a valid discourse about
the investigated object. We theoretically base our discussions on the paradigms of the
new economic history and the new social history, taking the conceptual emphases of
these approaches and interconnecting them, as well as the considerations on memory
developed by intellectuals Maurice Halbwachs, Walter Benjamin and Paul Ricoeur.
