This thesis presents a new approach, based on the theory of stochastic
processes, for the spectral characterization of the signal generated by a laser and the modulated signal in a external electro-optic modulator considering amplitude and phase noise generated by spontaneous emission of photons. Expressions are deduced for the autocorrelation function and the power spectral density of optical signals considering phase noise with low, medium and high variance. The models developed are generic because they are independent of any specific probability distribution of the amplitude and phase noise and do not depend on the shape of the pulse modulating digital signal.
