INTRODUCTION: In 2003, there was an important expansion of the Federal Universities in Brazil, establishing as one of the main goals the implementation of public universities in the interior that allowed the greater entrance of students to higher education. The expansion of the universities in Brazil was of great value for the country's development, however, studies warn that the insertion of students in universities can bring positive factors to their personal and professional life, as well as negative charges such as, psychic suffering and mental disorders. In view of the above, this research aims to answer the following guiding questions: What is the occurrence of mental illness among university students? What factors predisposes to mental illness? PURPOSE: To verify the frequency of mental illness risk among nursing students and to identify the factors that contribute to psychic illness. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. In the thematic modality, the Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and a sociodemographic questionnaire will be used, which will have nursing students from a public university in the interior of Paraíba as research subjects. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: It was identified that among the participants of this research that most were female and young adults. The prevalence of MCT among university students was 65.1%. According to the variables outlined in SRQ-20, students reported that: Feeling nervous, tense or worried 82.5% and Tired easily? 66.7%.CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of risk of mental illness among university students participating in this study was evidenced. In this sense, it is fundamental that the university seeks coping strategies and integrative actions to prevent students from becoming mentally ill.
