Résumé:
Human aging has motivated discussions and reflections in the search for a better understanding about the conditions of this process, particularly in view of the vulnerability of the elderly to episodes of violence, identified as an important public health problem. Objectives: To investigate the episodes of violence against the elderly and their consequences; and know the social support measures for coping with situations of violence. Method: Descriptive exploratory study of qualitative design carried out in the city of Araruna, Paraíba state, with six elderly victims of violence. Data were obtained through interviews and subsequently submitted to the technique of content analysis. Results: There were episodes of physical, psychological and financial violence, mainly experienced in the family environment and practiced by a family member close to the victim. As support measures, it was observed that the elderly used the Specialized Reference Center for Social Assistance (CREAS) as the main support measure, in addition to the legal means, family and society. Conclusions: The weakness of measures to protect and control violence against the elderly leads to the strengthening of vigilance towards this population, which undoubtedly requires education on the nuances of violence and instruction to denounce and seek mechanisms of protection and social support.
