Resumen:
The relationship between physical activity and the course of aging with health is one of the
topics most addressed today and has been increasingly questioned and investigated
scientifically, due to the aging population worldwide, occurring mainly here in Brazil. These
practices should be stimulated by health professionals, but also with the participation of family
members, since the benefits they bring to the elderly are great. It is important to link the
governments so that there is an incentive in the creation of programs, and thus stimulating
public policies so that they can implement these actions. It is necessary to discuss the
importance of physical activity in the process of healthy aging, due to the population size of the
world's elderly, which soon comes accompanied by pathologies in which they are characteristic
in this phase of life, where they are often related to sedentary, which is a predisposing factor to
morbidity and mortality in this period of life. In view of this, it has been found that these healthy
habits are essential to improve and promote the health of the elderly, preventing and minimizing
the harmful effects of aging and contributing to a better quality and life expectancy of the
elderly. This work aims to carry out a literature review with the objective of making an analysis
through the most recent publications, referring to the importance of physical activity for the
elderly, in national and international databases. The search was done through the portals
SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), LILACS (Latin American Literature),
MEDLINE (Online System of Search and Analysis of Medical Literature), and BDENF
(Nursing Database), in a range corresponding to 2011-2017, by means of access to the terms:
elderly, physical activity and health. We observed that physical activity is a great tool in the
reduction of diseases and diseases in the elderly, of physical activity in the process of a healthier
aging. However, it reports some obstacles, both for the elaboration of physical activity programs
by health professionals and the population, and for the adhesion of the elderly to put into
practice this it is concluded that the practice of physical exercises in the elderly population leads
to improvements in physical, psychological, including morbidities, promoting well-being and
acquiring a better social integration.
