The search for a better performance in sports is increasing; there are nutritional means that help in improving performance and yield. One such means are the ergogenic resources, among them caffeine. It is a substance belonging to the group of methylxanthines that has been used by athletes and regular practitioners for improving physical performance. Its ergogenic potential has been tested in the practice of any sports modality. It is believed that caffeine has central and peripheral mechanisms of action, capable of exciting or restoring brain and bulbar functions, as well as triggering important metabolic and physiological changes that would improve athletic performance. The objective of this study was to systematically review the ergogenic effects of caffeine on physical activity. The research was carried out in the databases Medline, Pubmed, Lilacs, Scielo, Google Scholar and national and international health committees, which will include bibliographical references from the years 2011 to 2019. We found 75 articles and 59 study materials. The use of this substance nowadays has been growing a lot, mainly by those who make gym, sport or regular activities. However, many athletes and people have used this substance, without knowing its effects, without proper professional guidance, which can contribute to the appearance of undesirable side effects, putting at risk the physical integrity of these individuals. In this context, the present work makes a better explanation on this theme, in order to improve the objective in question, to report its effects and to improve the quality of life.
