Resumen:
The practice of using chemicals in order to prevent diseases, improve the health status and / or
maintenance is observed since ancient times, and for some it is using the process called: self-
medication. It is considered that the consumption of a drug without the guidance of a trained
professional, is the use of incorrect doses and / or use by an inadequate period. With regard to
the nursing students, the practice is considered alarming in order to have greater access to
scientific information and becomes more serious when it comes to individuals who already
have scientific knowledge of Pharmacology. Research on screen it is a study with a
quantitative approach, developed together with the students of the undergraduate course in
Nursing at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) - Campus Cajazeiras, in the
year 2016, involving students who attend from the first to the seventh period and has the
objective to: assess the amount of students who use this practice; analyze which gender makes
more use of the practice; and to examine what types of drugs are most used among students;
investigate quantitatively whether there has been emergence of adverse reactions reported
after the practice of self-medication, and if during the course, with the knowledge acquired,
there was an increase or decrease of the same. The results were organized according to the
variables studied, where it shows that 100% of individuals used non-prescription drugs; the
female is 94.3% and men 5.7%; drugs with a higher incidence of use have analgesic,
antiinflammatory and antipyretic; the incidence of students who reported not having presented
any adverse effects was 83.02%, while only 16.98% reported having presented some adverse
effect. From the results presented, we conclude that the practice of self-medication is quite
widespread among scholars of all covered periods, which shows the great need for
intervention with these students with more effective approach with regard to the risks of self-
medication.
