Resumo:
Nowadays, it is noticeable that the numbers related to disengagement in higher institutions are increasing, it is also true that higher education can be considered as one of the means that enable the individual a higher position in the market, even so, the numbers of withdrawals continue to rise gradually. With this in mind, this research aimed to investigate the permanence of students of the physics and biological sciences degrees of the Education and Health Centre of the Federal University of Campina Grande at the Cuité campus, analysing and reflecting on the reasons that cause permanence or not of the students. Moreover, the aims are: to deepen the concepts of field, cultural capital and habitus of Pierre Bourdieu; analyse the factors that keep the students in the university or cause the student’s withdrawals in the CES’s degrees; to reflect on the social trajectory of undergraduate students of Physics and Biological Sciences at UFCG-CES, Cuité-PB. The student’s social profile was analysed, based on data obtained in academic control and questionnaires. The questionnaires were made with students from the 5th semester in both morning and evening courses and were done quantitatively using Bardin’s content analysis. This research results pointed that there are numerous causes that can cause the student to stay or not in the institution. From those factors, it was possible to subdivide them into emotional (anxiety, bullying); financial (lack of scholarships and high cost); academic-professionals (related to the difficulty in understanding some of the course’s content or lack of support in the process of writing articles) and external causes (work and extra activities non-related to the course). It was possible to observe that sometimes the reasons that cause the withdrawal of the course are the same that cause the students to continue their studies. Finally, after analysing the social profiles of the students, it clear that all of them are very perseverant in pursuing their degrees, even with numerous challenges.
