Resumen:
Vitiligo is a major dermatological disease of unpredictable clinical course
characterized by achromatic stains and blemishes on the skin and mucous
membranes as a result of melanocytes destruction in affected areas. It is a
dermatosis with quite devastating psychological effect, particularly in individuals with
dark skin. Treatment is required and must be started early. However, vitiligo
treatment is a challenge, since there are numerous therapeutic options, but none
provides a definitive treatment. This study attempts to make an integrative review on
the major therapeutic options for vitiligo, highlighting the effectiveness and the most
appropriate use of each therapy in order to facilitate decision making regarding the
treatment of this disease. The papers were obtained in the CAPES database,
accessing the virtual health library (BVS), indexed in PubMed database and obtained
from full papers available in PUBMED, Lilacs and SCIELO, in Portuguese and
English . The descriptors used were "vitiligo and treatment", "vitiligo therapy" and
"tratamento de vitiligo", between 2005 and 2015. Based on the inclusion and
exclusion criteria 25 (twenty five) publications were included in this study. It was
found that several studies have reported the efficacy of combined treatment for
vitiligo. The NB-UVB therapy was superior to other types of phototherapy and with
good results in both adults and children. The new immunomodulatory therapies have
shown great success and the surgical techniques proved to be great options in
treatment of segmental and non-segmental vitiligo.
