Abstract:
The appearance of means of transport or motorized vehicles in the 18th century
facilitated the locomotion of people and cargo providing rapidity without physical effort by
the human being. Until those years, the transport was made by animals and carriages
tensioned by the animals themselves. After the years, these means of transport improvement
and multiplication create a new culture in the universe and make possible the evolution of
other cultures. There are uncountable benefits for the society provided by this machine also
called automotive. However, over the years and without human being at first realized the
gravity of the situation this useful mean of transport has been throwing out to the atmosphere
harmful elements for the environment. Automotives enabled the advancement of new
technologies, but have also contributed to impair the health of the entire universe. The amount
of polluting elements released in the atmosphere has been increasing uncontrollably especially
in large cities worldwide. Pollutants emitted at a particular location can travel thousands of
miles and go to other places. In order to control the emission of pollutants by motorized
vehicles, governments of many countries had work out to develop specific laws establishing
limits for emission of pollutants in the atmosphere. Brazil and other countries created specific
laws to handle with this subject. This work aims to collect data about emissions of pollutants
and noise levels in 40 vehicles with engine capacity of 1.000 cc in the city of Maceió,
Alagoas, Brazil. The automotives are from four Brazilian factories – named in this work as A,
B, C and D. The research was made at Naiv-Senai/AL. During analyzes the driver answered a
questionnaire in order to know the profile of its user about the quality of the vehicle
maintenance service. The study was conducted from July to September 2012. After analysis
and discussion, the conclusion is that when vehicle maintenance is properly performed,
pollutants and noise emissions stay below the limits established by law.
