Medicinal plants have been used for a long time on the treatment of several diseases, over the years this knowledge passed between generations and thus perpetuated this culture. With thecnologies came the development of herbal medicine that are defined by the exclusive use of plant drug derivatives, without any active metabolite isolated. Among the most used medicinal plants by the population there is the Aloe vera, which is popurlaly known as “babosa” and is well used on the comestic industry for its moisturizing activity. In medicine it is used for its main anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and healing actions, being mentioned on literature for the treatment of wounds. Due to the high cost of conventional treatments, it is seen in phytotherapy as an accessible and quality alternative for the treatment of several types of wounds. The objective of the study was to develop and characterize the gel based on Aloe vera for the Manoel Casado de Almeida Pharmacy School. The research were done at the Educacion and Health Center off the Federal University of Campina Grande, located in the city of Cuité – PB. For the quality control, chemical physical tests were carried out as determine pH, apparent density, viscosity, spreadability and centrifugation test and the microbiological control. The gel demonstrated acceptable physicochemical characteristics exhibiting pH 5, bulk density 0.1018 (± 0.0008), viscosity above 10,000 cP, and adequate stability. Absence of bacterial contamination and fungal growth above the pharmacopoeial limits. Thus, given the therapeutic potential, it is suggested to investigate the causes of the contamination and evaluate the need for adjustment in the preservative system of the formulation.
