Abstract:
Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an important
psychiatric condition, being considered the most common mental disorder in
childhood. Difficulty concentrating to start or complete a task (inattention),
hyperactivity and impulsivity are the symptoms that characterize this disorder. For a
long time it was thought that ADHD was restricted to childhood and adolescence.
However, today it is known that it can persist into older ages. It can affect several life
aspects of its bearer and develop a great deal of impairments. Without the proper
treatment complications tend to leave an impact both mentally and physically. The
objective of this integrative review is to discuss the main complications of ADHD in
different age groups that are affected by the disease. Research was done with
publications found in the following databases: Literatura Latino-Americana e do
Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO)
and Medical Published – service of the U.S National Library of Medicine (PubMed).
Only material from the last 5 years was selected. Through the data collected it was
observed that complications in children were related to school, social and behavior
problems, with the abuse of substance having a bigger effect on the teen years.
Some of those impairments persisted into adulthood along with new ones related to
work, family and motor issues. Not enough information about the subject was found
concerning elders. Given this information, it is important to identify those
complications while they are at early stages and give the proper care to ensure good
quality of on those affected by ADHD.
