Abstract:
In recent years, Brazil has undergone an aging process, proportionally,
we have a larger population exposed to vulnerability and fragility, the greater the
propensity for hospitalization, the most common causes are external factors.
Identifying the intensity of hospitalizations is fundamental for the development of
tools that can better assist the service in the geriatric area and, thus, expose alert of
preventive measures. General Objective: To explore available official and latest
data related to the numbers of hospitalizations of elderly people due to external
causes in Brazil. Method: The study is classified as a retrospective ecological
analysis that has a descriptive nature, from a quantitative approach. Through the
Health Information System (SIS), secondary indicators were obtained available in the
DATASUS database that can be accessed through the Ministry of Health website.
These data related to the external causes of hospital admission in the SUS, in the
years of 2008 to 2016, of the population sample over sixty years old. Results and
Discussion: Statistically studied variables, when they have significance, by means
of the contingency coefficient show low or no correlation. Conclusion: There is a
contradiction with literary studies that did not make use of statistical analysis. Such
divergence could jeopardize the development of, for example, preventive actions or
important notifications such as aggressions.
