The food and nutrition are pillars of health promotion, achieving good results, able to step in positively in the quality of life of the individual, thus creating an impact throughout society. The first best practice for child feeding is the exclusive breast feeding, where this gets only breast milk, no other liquids or solids. The achievement or not this act is strongly connected with the social enviroment in which the mother is, due to this the need to raise awareness of the population about the benefits of breastfeeding. The aim of this study was evaluate the knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding. This study consists of a quantitative approach, performed on Dr. Deodato Cartaxo Maternity., whose sample of study subjects was approached in the period from January to February 2018, from a semi-structured interview, guided by a pre-tested form. The universe of the study consisted of 45 women in the postpartum period, which had emotional and physical conditions to participate in the survey, among which 14 (31.1%) performed vaginal birth, and 31 (68.8%) Cesarean child-birth, these with the age between 16 and 39 years. As for the level of education of the interviewed, 17 (37.7%) had primary school, 14 (31.1%) reported having completed high school, 08 (17.7%) reported having high school incomplete, 04 (8.88%) report higher education, and 02 (4.4%) mention incomplete higher education. According to the results, all the participants held consultations of prenatal care during pregnancy, although when asked about having received guidance on breastfeeding during the prenatal, most reported not to have received guidance on the topic. From the results it is possible to consider that is essential to recicle and qualify the health promotion action and the education about maternal health and recently birth period, emphasizing the relevance of exclusively maternal breastfeeding, and the suitable complementation between six months and two years of age of the child. The attempt to sensitize and guide the population about the benefits of breastfeeding is strongly relevant due the qualification of mother-child health.
