Abstract:
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is designed to provide specialized, quality and uninterrupted care to the critical patient by an interdisciplinary team, in order to meet the needs of this patient. The study aimed at drawing the profile of admissions in the ICU of the Regional Hospital of Cajazeiras, Paraíba, Brazil. This is a retrospective, documentary study conducted through a quantitative field research. 240 patient admission records were studied between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. The variables observed were: age, gender, origin, length of stay, causes of admission and evolution. The data were collected through a data collection script, made through the data objectified by the study, taken directly from the patient's chart, Nursing report book and the admission and discharge book of the Nursing team. The results show that the population is predominantly male and elderly, coming from the Red and Yellow Axis of the appropriate institution studied. The main causes of hospitalization were Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases, followed by causes related to the Post-operative period. Knowledge of these data is of fundamental importance to improve the work process and improve the quality of care, thus enabling nurses to plan care actions for these critical patients through the elaboration of evaluation tools and methodologies for qualified nursing care , but also to contribute to the health services developing important strategies that serve as planning and organization of the service, minimizing mainly the mortality rates in these sectors.
