Abstract:
Faced with the emergence of the contemporary phenomenon of global population aging, is
strengthened in Brazil two great expectations: that the State complies with its obligation to
guarantee the elderly the right to medical and social care adequate, and that the family is
responsible for their daily care. It happens that in Western society, care for each other, and
especially with the elder, has for centuries been assigned to the female figure, though, often,
to her absence. This study proposes an investigation about the family caregivers of the elderly
in Cajazeiras-PB, and has as main objective to analyze the perception of these people about
their role in the exercise of this care. The study included 12 caregivers, mostly women, who
live in an outlying neighborhood of Cajazeiras. These were previously informed about the
purpose of research and all their rights as informants. Data for the study were collected
through the application of semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to a qualitative
perspective on the issues. From this analysis it was found that the subjects of this research
cultivated provincial daily habits regarding exercise care with each other, eliminating one full
reflective exercise of the role played. It is found out, too, little or no effective caregiver in its
election process to exercise this care. Noting up so a conformist attitude on the part of the
caregiver elected to play this role. Therefore, it is necessary to offer to this person caregiver
consistent subsidies for the effectiveness of home care and health care, so that, albeit
indirectly, also care for caregivers.
