Palliative Care aim to provide an adequate quality of life to the patient during the process of death and dying and his family during the mourning period. For such care are offered a skilled multidisciplinary team is necessary, since health professionals are not prepared for the academy to provide such assistance; and it is essential that public efforts to create policies and protocols in order to implement palliative care in all health care levels, especially in primary care so that all people with chronic and degenerative diseases can be met with quality and patients out of healing therapeutic possibilities can have a dignified death and his family assisted and supported during the process of death and dying and the grieving process. To investigate the understanding of nurses on palliative care in primary health care in the municipality of Cuité-PB. METHODOLOGY: This is a study of qualitative nature, carried out in February and March 2015 with clinical nurses of the Family Health Strategy in Cuité municipality in Paraíba. Construction of the themes, the Content Analysis technique was used, proposed by Bardin. In this perspective, seven thematic categories were constructed: "Understanding Palliative Care"; "Understanding Therapeutic Modalities Palliative"; "Understanding the patients who need palliative care in primary care"; "Realizing the multidisciplinary team as part of palliative care in primary care"; "Understanding the aspects related to the implementation of palliative care in primary care"; "Realizing the incipient to remedy"; "Practicing Palliative Care". RESULTS: It was found that the survey participants know the real meaning of palliative care, but do not consider themselves able to provide such assistance during their care practice as nurses. With regard to clinical management, research participants nurses know and perform some therapeutic modalities used in palliative care because they need to provide care to the client. CONCLUSION: Thus, sees the necessity of lifelong education be offered to nurses, so that palliative nursing care is actually provided to patients out of therapeutic possibilities of cure, meeting the customer's needs and your family.
