Pain is a perception of biological etiology, but with subjective interpretation and individual, that is, each person reacts differently to the experienced pain. In the context of palliative care, pain is understood as the 5th vital sign and includes within its construct evaluation, registration and clinical management efficiently. When it comes to terminal patients, pain relief is guided from the perspective of total pain, relief of suffering which is intended to promote physical comfort, psychological and spiritual patient, bringing him thus dignity. The nurse plays important role in assisting the patient experiences the terminally, considering that is the member of the multidisciplinary team that stays longer in contact with it. So, should have technical and scientific expertise to provide a holistic and quality care. This research aimed to understand the process of evaluation and management of patients with cancer pain conducted by nurses. This is an exploratory study, qualitative, held in November and December 2014 with nurses of a philanthropic hospital that serves patients with advanced cancer in the large meadow municipality in Paraíba. Construction of the themes, the content analysis technique was used, proposed by Bardin. In this perspective, five thematic categories were constructed: "Understanding palliative care"; Caring for patients with cancer pain "; "Keeping careful with knowledge and responsibility"; "Pain assessment arrangements" and "palliative care for pain relief" .Constatou is that research participants know the systematic methods of pain assessment, but not used due to other administrative activities. with respect to clinical management, participants of the research nurses know and perform some therapeutic modalities used in palliative care. Thus, we conjecture about the need for continuing education be offered to nurses, to the Nursing Palliative Care, are effectively targeted to meet the patient's needs as a whole, and subsidized by scientifically proven methods, enabling greater security and legal support in care delivery.
