Resumo:
Congenital syphilis is considered an important public health problem, despite that this is an easily preventable disease through timely and effective actions in prenatal care. It is considered an important marker of quality of care for maternal and fetal health, shown on Brazilian list of Hospitalization for Primary Care Sensitive Conditions. This study aimed to investigate the trend of admissions for congenital syphilis in Brazil during the period 2008 to 2013 This is an exploratory, descriptive epidemiological research with a quantitative approach. Secondary data was obtained from the Hospital Information System of the Department of the Health System. Observed that the number of hospitalizations in Brazil, showed an upward trend. In the Northeast and Midwest regions had the highest and lowest number of admissions respectively. Variables females, less than 1 year and nonwhite race were the most frequent in all Brazilian regions, except the South, which had the greatest number of hospitalizations in males and Caucasians. It is concluded that the increasing number of admissions for congenital syphilis demonstrates the failure of approaches to control this disease policies. The effective implementation of existing protocols should happen through joint articulation of managers and health professionals. It is necessary to strengthen the team's actions of the Family Health Strategy in preventing these events, with emphasis on early identification of pregnant women and conducting a comprehensive and quality care.
