Resumo:
The steep rise in population coupled with the irrational consumption has resulted in production right solid waste. The environmentally sound disposal of this byproduct of human activities has been one of the main challenges faced by public administration and society. Based on this background, the main objective of this study was to analyze the process of implementing and operating the landfill in the municipality of Puxinanã-PB using the system sustainability indicator Pressure-State-Impact-Response (PEIR). In terms of methodology, the study can be characterized as descriptive and exploratory conducted in the form of a case study. Data were obtained from the realization of obtaining primary data along with social and institutional actors with some kind of bond with the problem of solid waste in the city, associated with secondary data analysis and non-participant observation. The results indicate that the total of 26 indicators, only 2 of them could be considered positively, they were burning waste in the open and in housing unit solid waste disposal, corresponding to a percentage of 8%, which reveals a of environmental unsustainability as the problem of disposal of solid waste at the county landfill. This situation demands the need for change in public policy, environmental management and a higher level of citizenship of the population to revert this situation.
