Résumé:
According to the World Health Organization - WHO, the elderly are chronologically classified, in countries less developed, as individuals aged 60 years or more. According to estimates for 2025, Brazil will have 85% of elderly people and theses will have at least a non communicable chronic disease (NTCD) associated. The high prevalence of NTCD is a major feature of the epidemiological transition process, which is occurring primarily in developed countries and in Brazil has been happening in very fast way from the 1960s onwards. In Brazil, The Institutions of Long Permanence for Aged are most often aggregated to dependence, in accommodating a large number of elderly in need of nursing, with a large percentage of chronic diseases. This work aimed to characterize the health status of institutionalized elderly and people with chronic diseases, in the Institutions of Long Permanence for Aged (ILPI): “Casa do Idoso Vó Filomena”, in Cuité - PB city. In the study were included individuals aged sixty (60) years or less, they were considered elders, of both sexes and residents of the institution, patients with non communicable chronic diseases. The variables used in the evaluation were: anthropometric data, weight, height, age, body mass index (BMI) for seniors, waist circumference (WC), Arm Circumference (CA), Circumference Calf (CC), height knee (HJ), subscapular skinfolds (SS), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), blood pressure (BP), use of medications, presence of chronic diseases and analysis of biochemical tests. The results were analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel 2010, with the average analysis, standard deviation and simple frequency. The results obtained from anthropometric measurements, according to BMI, WC, AC and MNA, have diagnosed that the majority of elderly with malnutrition or loss of muscle mass. The evaluation of the results of WHR and WC variables presented risk of developing cardiovascular disease, the biochemical tests showed plasma levels within the normal range, the mean blood pressure was within the limits, of 100% of elderly people use medicaments and 77% claim to have a chronic disease non communicable. Despite the prevalence of chronic diseases, the elderly presented a predominance of low weight, showing that is relevant the need of structuring actions based on diagnosis of specific problems, subsiding programs such as promotion of continuous nutritional education and monitoring of nutritional status and health of institutionalized elderly
