Resumo:
The present work aims to analyze the decline of sugarcane production, raw material for the production of rapadura and the changes occurred in the agricultural space of the municipality of São José da Tapada Lagoon, Alto Sertão da Paraíba. The municipality has been undergoing an agricultural and livestock restructuring, where sugarcane agriculture has been replaced by other agricultural activities in the last 10 years. The interval between 2004 and 2013 was delimited to analyze the causes and consequences of this decline. The deductive empirical method was used, using resources such as interviews with producers, visits to rural communities, data from IBGE and EMATER and experiences lived by the author to explain the changes in the rural space. There was a change in agricultural activities, where farmers are looking for more profitable activities such as traditional corn and bean crops and beef and dairy cattle. In summary, at the end of the monographic work we notice the changes that occurred in rural areas, adapting to the new economic reality of this municipality.
