Currently, the occupational accidents with biological material represents an impact to the
health facilities by means of the regularity with which they occur. In 2005 the Ministry of

improvement in professional's safety, promoting a reduction in the events of accidents. This
study aims to verify the occurrence of accidents within nursing professionals; looking for

examine which measures are adopted by professional after accident. This is a transversal
study with quantitative approach. In this study, participated female nurses professionals
working in a Regional Hospital in the interior of Paraíba. For the data collection it was
employed a questionnaire with objective questions in accordance with the objectives
formulated for such research. This study was the result of an extraction of a part of the
research of the Institutional Program for Scientific Initiation Scholarships (PIBIC) entitled
Vaccine and Serologic Profile For Hepatitis B workers of hospital care, which followed all the
items in Resolution 466 / 12 of the National Health Council (CNS), which regulates research
with human beings. As for the results, it was found that the nurses suffered most accidents
with biological material were the nursing assistants, with the age group 31-61 years as the

So we can conclude that the main working accidents occurred mostly with nursing assistants.
Facing with the above results we have seen that it is of fundamental importance the
implementation of continuing education and qualification of these professionals, with
emphasis on the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the protection of
patients, but also of health professionals.
