Résumé:
During growth, the child goes through moments of physical, psychic and social
adaptations, these adaptations are part of the development of every human being. From the
progressive development of the child, the family also undergoes intense modifications, which
are responsible for dictating development, stimulating the practice of healthy life habits, and
then preventing the development of diseases and health problems of the child. Overall
objective: To evaluate the body mass index of children in the 5- to 10-year age group and to
correlate the findings with the possible potential factors for the development of chronic not
transmissible diseases (CNTD). Methodology: It is descriptive – exploratory type, field, with
quantitative approach. The research was carried out in three elementary schools of the
Municipality of Umari in the state of Ceará, being that these schools are two of the private
initiative and another public (municipal). The data of the research were analyzed by the
statistical program SPSS version 24.0. Outcome and discussion: 121 students were selected
for evaluation by completing all steps for inclusion in the survey. Regarding the nutritional
status of the students evaluated, using the chart of nutritional curve of the child's book of the
Ministry of Health of 2007, it was observed that most of them presented a adequate BMI. The
frequency of consumption was assessed according to the parents and guardians reports, and
whether they consumed such foods daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly or do not eat, also
reporting how many times the average student consumes food. Although the data refer to a
satisfactory number of students in relation to physical activity practices, there is a significant
demonstration of students who do not practice or practice only once a week. Conclusion:
Anthropometric measures are simple and extremely relevant to identify the risks of
developing CNTDs in schoolchildren aged 5 to 10 years. The high rates of overweight and
underweight discovered with the analysis of the investigated, shows the need for preventive
actions in schools, causing the family to participate in these actions, to have a high rate of
change in habits and a good biopsychosocial development of schoolchildren.
