Resumen:
Among the major emergencies that threats life, Cardiopulmonary Arrest (CPA) is considered the most complex once their chance of survival is directly related to its care, which should be fast, safe and effective. The study is aimed to investigate the knowledge of nursing students of a public higher education institution on the Basic Support and Advanced Life in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. This is a descriptive field study within a qualitative approach which was conducted with 29 nursing students at the Federal University of Campina Grande campus Cajazeiras-PB. It was used for the data collection a semi-structured interview, which took place in December 2014, after approval by the Ethics and Research Committee of the educational institution. For data analysis we used the technique of the Collective Subject Discourse (DSC) proposed by Lefèvre and Lefèvre, resulting in 07 collective discourses. All stages of the research rigorously followed the National Health Council Resolution 466/2012. Among the 29 students interviewed 23 were female and 07 were male with mean age of 23 years, with a predominance of students from the Paraíba state, besides students from other states, for instance, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas and São Paulo. During the talks it was revealed the lack of training and the insecurity of academics related to PCR, the lack of practice leaves afraid, blaming the educational institution for not providing environments that prepares them better to stressful situations. The weakness was evident in knowledge about Basic Support and Advanced Life as well as the signs of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. So, it is needed to strengthen the academic training of future nurses by increasing the practical approach to the academic reality they will face by reducing the gap in learning. In addition, it is essential to expand the network of partnerships with health institutions in order to increase the range of field practice options and consequently contribute to the learning process of students in basic life support situations and Advanced Life in Cardiopulmonary Arrest.
