Resumo:
The pregnancy is characterized by being a period of intense changes in the maternal body,
requiring adequate monitoring in order to prevent complications. Gestational hypertensive
disorders represent a major cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, so that the
search for methods of prevention, such as the use of calcium, has become the object of research.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of calcium for prevention of hypertensive disorders
of pregnancy. Regarding the methodological design, an integrative review was carried out,
using as a source of research the following databases: Virtual Health Library (BVS): Latin
American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) and database international Medical
Published - service of the US National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and selected a total of 7
articles published in the last 10 years. After analysis of the selected articles, it was observed
that, although some studies have shown inconclusive or no significant results, the use of calcium
as prevention of gestational hypertension proved to be an effective measure in reducing the risk
of preeclampsia, especially in pregnant women low intake of this mineral. Thus, we conclude
that calcium is a measure inexpensive, effective, safe and available for prevention of
hypertensive pregnancy disorders, but higher quality studies and in large scale are necessary to
evaluate the optimal dose, and the real effectiveness supplementation.
