Resumo:
This paper has as main goal to show the role of translation in the teaching/learning of the
English Language (EL) today. Firstly, it is shown an overview of the historical moments
which marked language teaching in Brazil. Then, it is presented a synthesis of the main
methods and approaches that have been adopted, in the attempt of systematizing the teaching
of the EL, with a focus on the exclusion of translation. Finally, based on the Functionalist
Theory of Nord (1991), Vermeer (1984), Reiss (1984) and on the theoretical assumptions of
researchers of other linguistic branches, such as Leffa (1988), Cook (1998), Oliveira (2014),
Branco (2011), it is presented activities that may be applied in the classroom which
demonstrate the importance of this tool in the teaching/learning of the EL.
