Resumo:
The function of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) consists to providing more security to the professionals and patients, reducing the risk of contagion and spread of infectious agents. However, some problems hinder adherence of the professionals to the FPP, among these the lack of habit, forgetfulness, inadequacy and unavailability, discomfort, decreased sensitivity, manual dexterity reduction, insufficient financial resources, absence of supervision and motivation, insufficient qualification, work overload and satisfactory physical structure, self-confidence, urgency when realizing procedures, unexpected situation, patients without a diagnose of contagious disease, as factors that also determine the non-use of FPP. Objective: To evaluate the nursing professional knowledge about the biosecurity measures focusing on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the assistance to patients at Adult and Intensive Pediatric Unit of the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital of Campina Grande – Paraíba. Methodology: Fields research, descriptive, with quantitative approach, realized at the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital (ACUH), with 56 professionals of the nursing team in the Adult and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) located in Campina Grande City – Paraíba, after approval by the ethics committee in research of the ACUH, under CAAE, nº. 42611415.20000.5182, through a structured questionnaire with sociodemographic data and objective questions about the theme. Results and Discussion: The results were analyzed and presented in tables and graphs forms in order to systematize the discussion and facilitate the understanding. We got a score of 22 nurses and 34 nursing technicians, in which 56 (95%) were female and 3 (5%) were males, emphasizing that 59% of the sample had different specializations. The relationship between the PPEs available and those that are used in the assistance revealed that conduct between professionals are quite distinct which can result in inadequate procedures and cause diseases to professional and patients health. In relation to the work accident cutting punch stuff pointed out that 23 (41%) answered, affirmatively, to this question, the needle being the main object responsible, and 13 (23,2%) of that suffered the accident did not realize any conduct after exposure. About the infections, the participants recognize that both they and their families can spread pathogenic microorganisms aggravating, thus, the clinical condition. Prolonging hospital stay, increasing hospital costs and causing more suffering for everyone. Final Thoughts: against the problematic is indispensable a great commitment of nursing professionals and managers in order they can promote training and surveillance actions for professionals to adopt the precautionary measures and appropriate conduct for the correct use of PPEs, realization of hygiene of the hands with the right technique, disposal of cutting punch materials at appropriate places, and, thus, realize a free assistance of damage to themselves, to patients and professionals.
