Resumo:
Since a few decades ago, language teaching has had as its main objective to develop the four
basic skills in the learners, namely: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Through the
study of the history of English language teaching, it is possible to see that, traditionally, these
four skills are approached in a segmented way, or else, only one or two of them are highlighted
while the others remain excluded. However, currently, much has been spoken and researched
about such integration process, the idea is to develop a work which combines them in order to
enhance the communicative competence in the learners. In this context, the objective of this
research is to discuss relevant issues in relation to this topic, through the lenses of the
Communicative Approach, based on the studies of Brown(2007), Harmer(2007), Hinkel (2006),
Larsen-Freeman (1986, 2000), among others. Thus, this study consists of a bibliographic
research which aims to survey the state of the art to better found the discussion sand proposals.
In it, it will be showed why and how to integrate the four skills, besides, it will be suggested
some activities that contemplate such integration.
