Resumo:
The objective of this research is to analyze the novel Emma (1815), by Jane Austen (1775-
1817) from the perspective of the female Bildungsroman, having as theoretical support the
studies of Maas (2000), Pratt (1981) and Pinto (1990), among others, since they discuss the
female Bildungsroman, its characteristics, origins and main aspects. In Austen’s novel, the
protagonist, Emma Woodhouse, through her great imaginative capacity along with her
propensity to matchmaking, commits a number of mistakes involving several people around
her, what makes her reflect upon her true self. This novel also shows some of Austen’s critics
about some themes, such as marriage and the English society of the XIX century in which she
lived. Thus, this monographic work will analyze how the errors and the protagonist process of
coming of age make this a female Bildungsroman.
