Abstract:
The objective of this work is to analyze, through bibliographical research, the
construction of the Gothic space based on the subjectivity of the narrator-character of
the short story The Pit and the Pendulum (1842), by the American author Edgar Allan
Poe (1809-1849). Whereas nothing in a short story is put in any way in its corpus, the
symbols of some entries are in the analysis of this research, based on Chevalier and
Gheerbrant (1998). To discuss both the story's trajectory and its characteristics, the
theoretical support of the research are authors such as Massaud Moisés (2006), Nadia
Battella Gotlib (1985), Patrice Pavis (1999), Carlos Reis and Ana Cristina M. Lopes
(1988). Considering this story as belonging to Gothic literature, the theoretical basis of
this aspect is in Carlos Antônio Leite (2006) and HP Lovecracft (1973), one of which
presents the Gothic trajectory in architecture, and another in the literature, besides
exposing its characteristics within the narratives of the eighteenth century. It is also
discussed about the life and work of this author, based on Spiller's (1961) vision, and to
understand more about his aestheticism, conceptions of Massaud Moisés (2006) are
used and, from them, the trajectory of the writer Edgar Allan Poe, the poet and the
storyteller, was discussed. Finally, the research exposes the characteristics of the Gothic
space present in the story, taking as reference the subjectivity and perspective of the
narrator-character and, to intensify the unity of effect, the discussion about the symbols
of entries like "pit", "pendulums" and "rats", were important for this analysis.
