Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in the body. Its prevalence grew accentuated in the last few decades, mainly in the developing countries. Its cause is multifactorial and depends on the interaction of genetic, metabolic, social, behavioural and cultural factors. Public health problems became, once the consequences for health are many and vary of the risk increased of premature death to the serious not lethal diseases, that they affect the quality of life directly. The necessity of loss of faster weight the possible one, takes the people to the search of medications that can help to arrive at the ideal weight, generally inappropriate drugs, of unknown substances, aiming at only loses it of weight, but forgetting them innumerable risks that these drugs can bring with its use. The methodology of the work consists of a bibliographical survey concerning the medications used in the treatment of the obesity, its form of action, release for the competent agencies and its collateral effects. For such, a search in the databases Medline, Pubmed, Lilacs and Scielo was accomplished, in Portuguese and English, by means of the describing following: obesity, anorexígenos, reduction of weight and the combination between them were used still recent book-texts and lines of direction of the national and international committees of health. The pharmacological treatment is intended only as an aid to dietary treatment and not as fundamental structure of treating obesity, since their use in suspending the weight gain may occur.
